Google DeepMind and Google Research launch public preview of Weather Lab website starting with the new experimental cyclone prediction model

Google DeepMind and Google Research have recently launched the public preview of Weather Lab– an interactive website for sharing Google’s AI weather models, starting with the new experimental cyclone prediction model.
Improving tropical cyclone prediction can help communities better prepare & stay safe. Developed with @GoogleDeepMind, we're launching Weather Lab to share our AI weather prediction models, starting with the new experimental cyclone prediction model. 🧵 pic.twitter.com/KNYQ7ld9mV

The tropical cyclone model is said to predict a cyclone’s formation, track, intensity, size, and shape-generation 50 possible scenarios, up to 15 days ahead. The company has also shared an animation, where this model (in blue) accurately predicted the paths of Cyclones Honde and Garance, south of Madagascar, at the time they were active. The model is also revealed to capture the paths of Cyclones Jude and Ivone in the Indian Ocean, almost seven days in the future.

It is revealed that internal testing shows that this model’s predictions for cyclone track and intensity are as accurate as, and often more accurate than, current physics-based methods. Google has also partnered with the US National Hurricane Center to validate its approach and outputs scientifically.
This cyclone model is trained to model two distinct types of data: a vast reanalysis dataset that reconstructs past weather over the entire Earth from millions of observations, and a specialized database containing key information about the track, intensity, size, and wind radii of nearly 5,000 observed cyclones from the past 45 years.
With the help of Weather Lab, users can explore and compare the predictions from various AI and physics-based models. When read together, these predictions can help weather agencies and emergency experts better anticipate a cyclone’s path and intensity.
